Club Meeting - May 17, 2012
Even though it is officially summer vacation, Circle K members Amanda, David, Rio, Jameel and Carol joined us for our breakfast meeting this morning. We are always happy to see them. Tonight, some of us will join them as they feed the homeless as part of their continuing commitment to Project Embrace. Also joining us was our current Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, Doug Beckham. Other guests included Lea Zanjani, 1st Vice President at California Bank & Trust and Tyler Church who works in software marketing. We hope they will visit us again and consider joining our Kiwanis family!
Our Student of the Month, Aaron Albanez, is a senior at Patrick Henry High School. Aaron and his dad were welcomed by Doug Grosmark, who introduced us to Aaron and explained why Aaron is so deserving of this honor. Aaron has a 3.9 GPA and is planning on becoming a doctor. He will attend UCSD next year as a pre-med major. In addition to excelling in math and science, Aaron also shines in the fields of music and drama, having performed in 21 theater productions. Aaron is a talented, well-rounded student who will continue to aim high! We wish him all the best as he embarks on this new phase of his life.
Mickey Zeichick had the great pleasure this morning to sponsor Bruce Pastor Jr. for induction into our club! Bruce was born August 9,1977 to Bruce and Kathi Pastor. He is a hometown boy who attended school at St. Therese, Lewis Junior High, Patrick Henry High School, Grossmont College, and SDSU. He has a degree in Geography from SDSU with an emphasis in Urban and Regional analysis. He has played in the past in a variety of “loud, fast, and obnoxious” bands, one of which (Sk8 or Die) made a 45 rpm single and a CD album. He worked at Caltrans for 10 years as Transportation Planner and currently has begun investing in real estate. He is engaged to Shay Lynn Harrison, who also joined us this morning. Shay grew up on Mount Helix and in Orange County. They met at Caltrans and were engaged on top of Cowles Mountain on Easter of 2010. They will make a very welcome addition to our Kiwanis family!
Bob Filner, a San Diego mayoral candidate, was our guest speaker this morning. If elected, his focus will be on reviving our City’s economy to create a thriving middle class and vibrant neighborhoods. He plans to create jobs and bring new businesses to our City by turning our port into a Maritime Center. He also vows to make San Diego the clean energy capital and job creation hub of the country. He places particular emphasis on building the infrastructure of our neighborhoods.
We have welcomed all four mayoral candidates to address our club so we can make informed decisions on city issues. We do not endorse any one particular candidate.

Club Meeting - May 10, 2012
We all came away from today’s meeting knowing that we are fulfilling our mission to “serve the children” of our community! We welcomed scoutmaster Chad Pinkelman who presented us with the 2012 Charter for Cub Scout Pack 928. This will enable us to continue our support of this active organization. Doug Grosmark showed a promotional video his Hearst Kids Club students made to encourage people to donate food items to their food drive. The food they collect next week will go to the Miramar Food Pantry to support the families of our service members. Circle K members from SDSU joined us, for what may be the last time this school year. They had their final meeting last night and are now preparing for finals. We are gratified that they made the extra effort at this busy time to come and share food, fellowship and many laughs.
Our Student of the Month from Hearst was Megan Cheever. She was accompanied by her proud mom, dad and brother. Her principal Mrs. Jorgensen and teacher Mrs. Kirkness explained why Megan was chosen for this honor. Megan is an outstanding student, who excels academically and is a role model for her fellow classmates. Megan can always be counted on to make the right choices and do the right thing in any given situation. Mrs. Kirkness also admires Megan’s fortitude as she strives to accomplish her goals. Megan likes to work with animals and she has the talent to succeed in whatever profession she decides to pursue.
While we pride ourselves on our service to children, today they served us! Lewis Middle School Builders Club members “took over” our meeting. They served breakfast, led us in some amazing singing and then got down to business. They came well prepared with baked goods and stuffed animals they auctioned off. They also quizzed us on a variety of topics and many of us soon realized we are NOT as smart as a fifth grader! By the close of the meeting they had raised $168 for their club! Their advisor Mr. Christ and Kiwanis sponsor Byron Newman are to be congratulated for all the time they spend helping these students learn the value of hard work and commitment to community service.

Club Meeting - May 3, 2012
This morning we were thrilled to present scholarship awards to three outstanding SDSU Circle K students. Current Circle K President Amanda Willis, Immediate Past President Scott Frame and Immediate Past Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor David Rozul each received a check for $1000. Kiwanians Rob Busby, Jeanie Labor and Kevin Tostado gave us a summary of all these students have accomplished during their tenure at SDSU and as members of Circle K. We are in awe of their dedication to their studies and to community service here in San Diego. Congratulations to all three!
Also joining us this morning were three dedicated community activists from New Entra Casa, a residential facility for ex-offender women. Pastor Hazel Dawson, Pastor James Dawson and therapist Kim Kelly gratefully accepted a check for $1177.50. This money was raised during a joint event with the Lions Club. We wish to thank our members Pat Jordan, Luisa Moore, Terry Shanklin and John Peterson for all the time and effort they have invested in this most worthwhile cause.
Our KOD this morning was our esteemed Dan Yauger. He managed to raise a substantial amount of cash by fining many of us for infractions he, himself, invented. It is easy to see why he is a successful lawyer! Byron Newman delivered two very funny Jokes of the Week and our current Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, Doug Beckham, filled us in on upcoming events in Division 21. Kevin Tostado introduced us to his lovely fiancee, Frances Scott, prompting a long round of applause. Unfortunately, we were saddened to hear that they will be moving to the east coast this summer while Frances attends school. Their departure will leave a huge void in our Kiwanis family, but we wish them the very best.
San Diego County District Attorney, Bonnie Dumanis, was our guest speaker. She is one of four candidates currently running for Mayor of San Diego. She believes her unique blend of experience – three-term District Attorney, Superior Court Judge and Clerk Typist – has given her the skills to successfully reorganize and run one of the largest criminal justice operations in California. Throughout her career Bonnie has been recognized as a team builder and organizational strategist. Now, Bonnie is ready to bring her lifetime of dedicated leadership to the Mayor`s Office. All four mayoral candidates will be afforded time to address our members before the election.

Club Meeting - April 26, 2012
In spite of the gloomy weather, our Circle K friends from SDSU were out in full force today! Amanda, Rio, Tatiana, Lisa W., Stephanie, Bonnie, Lisa K. and David made the trek across the 8 to join us for a fun and very informative breakfast meeting. We were also happy to welcome back our two new recruits, Bruce Pastor and Alex Zubak. We look forward to inducting them into our club next month. They have much to offer our club and our community!
John Peterson was surprised to discover that he has been chosen as the Grand Marshal of our Kiwanis SpringFest parade which will be held at 10:30, May 12. This is an honor John truly deserves. (Learn more about John’s contribution to our community on our “Member” page.) Member Kevin Tostado, was Co-Grand Marshal ten years ago, so John is in good company!
Our singing sounded pretty good when we started, but ended on a bit of a sour note! Many of us could use some voice lessons! But what we lack in talent, we more than make up for in enthusiasm! Byron Newman delivered his Joke of the Week, and generated a lot of laughs...and no moans! Keep it up, By!
Terry Shanklin was our KOD who took charge and asked us some interesting true/false questions. Even though it was early in the morning, we soon realized that ALL the answers were TRUE, so we all felt pretty smart! Terry introduced our guest speaker, his friend and physical therapist, Brett Bloom. As an owner of Longevity Physical Therapy, Brett has had the fortunate opportunity to impact the San Diego community for the past 8 years as a Physical Therapist, coach, and lecturer with a unique understanding of functional rehabilitation and training. He spends time treating patients at both Longevity Physical Therapy locations (Encinitas and Mission Gorge). As a former football player and Ironman finisher, he enjoys working with patients of all ages and talent levels. One of his core philosophies is that everyone is an athlete and can improve their performance through activity specific functional therapy. He is passionate about the importance of physical education in our schools and hopes to work with local PE teachers to teach our children that good physical fitness is important to maintain, and that this can be a fun goal to achieve!

Club Meeting - April 19, 2012
Circle K students from SDSU were out in strength this morning. We were pleased to welcome President Amanda and her colleagues David, Rio, Bonnie, Nadia and Lisa. We continue to be amazed by their enthusiasm and commitment to community service. They and other Circle K members will join us this Saturday, April 21, for Kiwanis One Day. Each year, Kiwanis clubs around the world join in this day of service. It’s a global effort, but it’s made of personal commitments. In San Diego, our project will involve the native plant restoration of Swan Canyon at the Hamilton Elementary School.
We also welcomed Natalie Gates, our student of the Month from Patrick Henry High School. Natalie was joined by her proud mother, Cyd Snyder, and Dean of Students, Jo McGlin. Ms. McGlin shared with us the comments made by Natalie’s teachers when they nominated her for this honor. Natalie is an outstanding scholar and athlete, who is also editor of the school newspaper. Natalie is greatly appreciated by her teachers and fellow students. Gene Elmore was pleased to present Natalie with her award and gift certificate. We know Natalie has a bright future ahead of her and we congratulate her on her commitment and dedication to excellence.
KOD Mickey Zeichick added to our administrative fund by asking for happy and sad dollars and by quizzing us on interesting facts concerning the music highlighted by the late Dick Clark. Mickey was thrilled to introduce her good friend Deena Feinman, our guest speaker. Deena is the Development Officer for Hadassah San Diego, and has served in that capacity for the past 12 years. Her job is to work with volunteers and promote Hadassah in the community.
Hadassah is a worldwide organization that celebrates its 100 year anniversary this year. Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for and commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel. It enhances the health of people worldwide through its support of medical care and research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Hadassah empowers its members and supporters, as well as, youth in Israel and America through opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy and Jewish continuity. There are 300,000 volunteers worldwide, with 2,600 in San Diego. We were most impressed by Deena’s presentation which highlighted the important work this organization does around the world, for all people, regardless of religion, ethnicity or political affiliations.

Club Meeting - April 12, 2012
Our Kiwanis motto is "Serving the Children of the World," and this morning we really lived up to our mission! Joining us were our good friends from SDSU's Circle K. We sponsor these amazing students, and are delighted by their sense of enthusiasm as they perform countless hours of community service here in San Diego.
Maya Rozenshteyn, a fifth grade student, was honored as our Student of the Month from Hearst Elementary School. Kiwanian Doug Grosmark had the pleasure of introducing Maya and presenting her with an award and certificate. Maya was joined by her dad, Roman, her teacher Chris Vasquez and principal Jamie Jurgenson. Ms. Vasques praised Maya's academic achievements and revealed that Maya's goal is to someday be an eye surgeon. Both Ms. Vasquez and Ms. Jurgenson agreed that Maya definitely has the talent and drive to achieve this lofty goal.
We were very happy to welcome Pershing Middle School eighth graders, Wesley Cooksy and Olga Bronshteyn, who won top prizes for their outstanding experiments and presentations at the 58th Greater San Diego County Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF) in Balboa Park. The students were mentored by Pershing Middle School science teachers Susan Benson, who joined us today, and Lance Justice. Kiwanian Byron Newman, who served as one of the judges, was our KOD and awarded Wesley and Olga their certificates and prizes. We were all very impressed by both students as they described their experiments and presented their results.
Wesley, who won first prize, spoke about his project, So Cool: Fans in the Wind Tunnel. He studied the efficiency and performance of household fans, with an eye toward saving energy by using fans in place of air conditioners. Wesley also won a top prize by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
Olga, the second place winner, presented her project Battling Bacteria: Which Hand-Washing Method Works Best? Surprisingly, she found that hand sanitizers did not do much better than washing with just water! Products like Soft Soap appeared to be the best choice. Olga also won prizes in the SD County Dental Society and the SD Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
This morning we were proud to welcome all these outstanding students. Mentoring them is what Kiwanis is all about. They are truly the leaders of tomorrow and we wish them much success!
Doug honors Student of the Month, Maya Byron with Olga, Wesley and Ms. Benson

Club Meeting - April 5, 2012
This morning, the Patrick Henry High School Key Club was in charge. Key Club President, Andrew Tran, ran the show, and he and his colleagues, Amy, Neda, Vanessa, Yemaya and Melina served breakfast to a full house. Also joining us this morning were our current Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, Doug Beckham, a former Circle K member, Amanda Gonzales and her friend Janet Harrington, Circle K members, David, Amanda, Rio, Nadia and Lisa, our new Edward Jones financial advisor, Alex Zubak, first-time visitor, Jennalisa O'Donnell as well as Kiwanian Brian Arnold's 3-year-old daughter, Megan.
Doug gave a moving tribute to Kiwanis International Trustee Oscar Knight, who recently passed away. A member of the Kiwanis Club of La Mesa for 23 years, Oscar served as its president in 1992-93. He served as governor of the Cal-Nev-Ha District in 2007-2008. A life member with 28 years of perfect attendance, Oscar also was a former member of the San Diego Kiwanis Club and a current and charter member of the Division 100 Miracle Mile of Quarters Club. His will be dearly missed by his entire Kiwanis family. (See "News" for Oscar's obituary.)
Key Club members led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic song. They also took pity on us and selected several easy songs that most, but certainly not all, of us could sing reasonably well! Worried that they could not live up to Byron Newman's high joke-telling standards, they did bow to him for today's Joke-of-the-Week. They quizzed us on how closely we listened to their introductions, and we did fairly well. Quick wit and a cunning ability to adapt quickly (and cheat!), gave Table Two a decisive win in a counting game. Table One bungled their chance and Table Three was left out in the cold! All proceeds from today's "pot" will be donated to Key Club.
Our meeting took on a more serious note when Andrew introduced our guest speaker, California State Legislator and San Diego mayoral candidate, Nathan Fletcher. Before entering politics, Nathan served for ten years on active and reserve duty with the United States Marine Corps, working in counterintelligence in the Horn of Africa and the Near East. Nathan believes it is time for a new vision, a new energy and time for a new generation of leaders, not tied to the gridlock or problems of the past, to step forward and lead. Nathan was both entertaining and informative, giving us his vision for the future of San Diego. All four mayoral candidates will be afforded time to address our members before the election.

Club Meeting - March 29, 2012
We were happy to welcome back our current Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, Doug Beckham. Doug told us he has written a glowing recommendation about our club in his annual evaluation! We were also happy to once again welcome Bruce Pastor, who has decided to join our club! Bruce will make a welcome addition to our fun-loving, community-minded organization.
Even though SDSU is on spring break, four members of Circle K made the early morning trek to our meeting. Members Carole O'Hara and Bonnie Her were joined by their new VP of Service, Allison White, and their new K-Family chair, Gerald Biando. We are always glad to welcome the energetic, dedicated members of Circle K, knowing that they will keep our tradition of community service alive in the years to come.
Doug Grosmark, our Hearst elementary school K Kids advisor, announced that his students raised $1250 during their "Pennies for Patients" campaign in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Doug should be commended for his efforts to instill in our youngest students the desire to help others.
Byron Newman served up his light-hearted jokes, and KOD Gene Elmore entertained us with interesting questions about our own state of California. Gene then introduced our guest speaker, Mat Kostrinsky, who is running for a seat on the San Diego City Council from District 7. Mat is a life-long resident of San Diego and attended Patrick Henry High School and SDSU. If elected, he hopes to bring a higher level of accountability to City Hall, where taxpayers come first and true fiscal responsibility and transparency are practiced. To learn more about Mat,

Club Meeting - March 22, 2012
We had a full house for breakfast this morning! Guests included Tatiana, Amanda and Jake from SDSU Circle K, Bruce Pastor and Jay Wilson. Kathy Butterstein, who organized our appearance in the Saint Patrick’s Day parade last weekend, delighted the crowd with a video which she put together. (Check it out on YouTube.) Those who did not go to the parade got to see how much fun we all had in spite of the wind and rain last Saturday. Most of us hope our club will do the parade again next year and that Kathy will be willing to coordinate our group. Kudos to Kathy for a job well-done!
Today we honored Ben Swann as the Student of the Month from Lewis Middle School. Ben is an outstanding seventh grader who is hard working and has earned the respect of his classmates and teachers. This young man also enjoys surfing. Ms. Zipp accompanied him as Gene Elmore presented his award and gift certificate. Congratulations, Ben! We know you will have a bright future!
President Luisa Moore had quite a number of announcements about upcoming events. The next few months will be very busy with service and social events. Check our calendar for updates. Our club is currently the top club for interclub attendance! John Peterson showed us his Distinguished Service Award, Deb Yost gave an update on SpringFest, and nice comments were made about members who have been doing great work with the youth programs. Brian Arnold did a stellar job as our Kiwanian of the Day, collecting happy/sad dollars and quizzing us about Mission Trails Regional Park.
Today we had the honor of having Ed Zwibel from the San Diego Police Department community relations division. Officer Zwibel serves in the Eastern service division (our area) which is the largest division in San Diego, and also known to be the safest with low crime rates. He reported on crime trends, neighborhood watch, how the community should be involved in staying safe, home security issues, and how the police department works and responds to the community needs. He emphasized that we should always call 9-1-1 for emergencies. The non-emergency number (531-2000) can be used to report suspicious activities that are not emergencies and the department appreciates and always responds to these calls in some way. See the San Diego Police Dept. website for more information about safety in the community, reporting procedures and crime related questions.

Club Meeting - March 15, 2012
This morning we had one of our best meetings ever! SDSU's Circle K members conducted a "Take Over" and ran the show. They did a terrific job and managed to raise $213 for their treasury.
Steve Barbone, the Circle K advisor was present, along with Scott Frame- president, Amanda Spendlove-VP of Service, Amanda Willis-VP of Administration, Bryan Dang-Treasurer, Lisa Kenmore-Treasurer-elect, Stephanie Fryer-Secretary-elect, Tatiana Caicedo-K-family chair, David Rozul-Circle K Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor, Hilario (Rio) Moncado-PR chair, and members Stella Kim and Nadia Inzunza. David started us off with the Pledge of Allegiance and a patriotic song. Scott tried his hand at the "Joke of the Day", but our own Byron Newman managed to trump him, drawing a few more laughs and a few less groans. Rio added to the fun with a big groan inducing pirate joke. Trivia questions brought in some cash, but the raffles for "Mystery Prizes" turned out to be very lucrative. The high bidders ended up winning a hug, an escort to the parking lot by Amanda, or a coupon to have the winner's shoes tied for him...too bad Doug had on loafers! The highlight of the proceedings was the bidding for the privilege of throwing a pie at Scott, David and the two Amandas. Needless to say, this created much laughter and a big mess!
We were also delighted to honor an outstanding Student of the Month from Patrick Henry High School, ROTC Cadet Lieutenant Junior Grade Jordan Robertson. Jordan was accompanied by his proud parents, Deidra and Jack, and Vice Principal Jim Good. Mr. Good gave us a very impressive summary of Jordan's many accomplishments. Jordan is an exemplary student who is currently carrying four AP courses in his Junior year. Jordan's ROTC Commander Mark Vizcarra was quoted as saying, "Jordan is a focused and driven young man who lives the three principles that have been the cornerstone of the United States Navy: Honor, Courage and Commitment. He makes us all proud." Upon receiving his plaque and dinner gift certificate from Doug Grosmark, Jordan thanked his parents and teachers for their continued support and Kiwanis for honoring him with this award.
Members were reminded about the St. Patrick's Day parade this Saturday in Balboa Park. Our sponsored youth groups will join us to celebrate and publicize our commitment to the youth of San Diego. Let's hope it doesn't rain on our parade!

Club Meeting - March 8, 2012
We had a packed house this morning. David, Amanda, Tatiana, Rio and Bonnie from SDSU's Circle K Club joined us as an interclub. Gene Elmore congratulated them on the impressive work they are doing to serve our community. President Luisa Moore presented Scoutmaster Chad Pinkelman from Pack 928 our check to help fund their Blue and Gold dinner. He thanked those of us who attended this fun event and invited us to join them for their upcoming Pinewood Derby at 3:00 on March 17 at the Allied Gardens Rec Center.
Doug Grosmark reported that the the March 4 free cardiac screening for high school students, sponsored by Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation, was a big success. One thousand students were tested and several were identified with heart anomalies which could lead to sudden cardiac arrest. These individuals will now be able to seek the care necessary to ensure a long and healthy life.
Myron Pasichny led us in a rousing rendition of Take Me Out To the Ballgame to welcome the 2012 baseball season, and Byron Newman once again provided a good laugh with his joke of the week. He also led us in a special prayer in honor of our charter member, Bobby Frankhouser, who celebrates his 90th birthday next week. KOD Bob Wall helped enlighten us with questions about health and wellness issues and the answers some of us invented brought much laughter and managed to increase our administration fund.
Gene Elmore introduced Jonathon Marshall our Student of the Month from Hearst Elementary School. Gene presented Jonathon with his award and a gift certificate to Brothers Restaurant, so Jonathon can treat his family to dinner. Jonathon was joined by his mom, dad, two grandmothers, teacher Ms. Iannuzzi and Principal Ms. Jorgensen. Both Ms. Iannuzzi and Ms. Jorgensen praised Jonathon for being a well-rounded student, who excels in academics, sports and music. We hope this award will be the first of many accolades Jonathon will receive.
Our guest speaker was Scott Sherman, who was accompanied by his wife, Norma. Scott is running for City Council from District 7. Scott believes that as a businessman, he can bring real fiscal reform to city hall, making it accountable, ethical and accessible. We will welcome other candidates for this council seat at future meetings.

Club Meeting - March 1, 2012
Our KOD this morning was Larry (Mac) Mc Leland. As a past Governor of the Cal-Nev-Ha district, Larry was the perfect member to welcome our current Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, Doug Beckham. Doug formally introduced himself to our members and outlined his vision for future community service and desire to attract new members. Doug also offered his enthusiastic support for Project Eliminate. With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. It will take $110 million - and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.
We also were happy to welcome our SDSU Circle K students, President-elect Amanda Willis and her colleagues, David Rozul, Tatiana Caecedo and Amanda Spendlove. Maggie Conway, from Edward Jones also joined us as did Brian Arnold's sidekick Jamie. Byron Newman generated many laughs with his "Steve Wrischnik Joke of the Week" and then managed to make us all disappear in 3 seconds! (He's an astounding magician!) Larry stumped us with questions about Kiwanis. Many did not realize (or more likely, not remember) that Kiwanis was founded in 1915, now serves 96 nations, with about 8,400 clubs worldwide. We couldn't help but feel proud that we are members of such a vital organization, dedicated to helping the children of the world!
Doug Grosmark informed us about the free cardiac screening for high school students which will take place on March 4. This important event is sponsored by the Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation which is committed to preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest/Death (SCA/D) in high school aged children.
John Peterson reported that he, Mary and Tony Haas and Luisa and Billie Moore, attended Cub Scout Pack 928's Blue and Gold Dinner at Marvin Elementary School. John shared with us his delight in seeing the young cub scouts having such a wonderful time. It is gratifying to support our cub scout troop where the community leaders of tomorrow learn the importance of helping others today.
Doug Beckham & Larry Mc Leland Tatiana C., Amanda B., David R. and Amanda W.

Club Meeting - February 23, 2012
A lot was happening at today's meeting. We welcomed many guests, some new and some old friends. We were honored that Doug Beckham, the Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, joined us once again, and volunteered to be our guest speaker next week. Circle K Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor David Rozul was joined by past SDSU president Ari Chessen and her mom Debie. Ari is currently working at a day care center and is planning on spending next year teaching English in Korea. Coming back for a second visit was Tommy Dault, and Bruce Pastor decided to join us after seeing our Kiwanis signs on Waring Road! Jeannie Labor introduced us to her friend Julie and Gene Elmore brought a date, his wife Wanda!
Our Student of the Month, Dante Juliano, attends Hearst Elementary school. He was accompanied by his parents, sister, brother, his teacher Ms. Kirkness and principal Ms. Jorgensen. Ms. Kirkness and Ms. Jorgensen are both impressed by Dante's instinctive ability to always "do the right thing," a trait they believe will lead to much success in life. In addition to being a role model in his classes, Dante is also an active participant in sports. This makes him a well-rounded young man. Dante graciously credits his success to the support of his parents and teachers.
San Diego Councilmember Carl DeMaio was invited to address us this morning, in the first of four "Meet the Mayoral Candidates" presentations. Carl is a businessman-turned-civic watchdog who pledges to "Clean UP City Hall." His "Roadmap to Recovery" lays out his plan to eliminate the city's $70 million-plus deficit now and forever.
The other three mayoral candidates will each appear at future meetings.

Club Meeting - February 16, 2012
An exciting and fun time was had by all today as we celebrated Mardi Gras, welcomed a Student of the Month and inducted a new member! President Luisa Moore provided beautiful, sparkly decorations along with lots of beads to help us prepare for the upcoming Mardi Gras celebrations taking place next week. SDSU Circle K members David, Amanda and Tatiana joined us, and were most impressed by our singing talent! (It was their eye rolls that gave them away!)
Gene Elmore presented Sophia Quiroz with her Student of the Month award and dining gift certificate. Joining her were her proud mom and dad as well as Patrick Henry High School principal Pat Crowder. We were amazed at the wonderful commitment to community service Sophia demonstrates by her active role in many school clubs and activities, while still striving for academic success. It is obvious her hard work has paid off since Sophia is this year's salutatorian! She has a bright future ahead of her and we are proud to recognize her as an outstanding student!
It was a special honor to induct Genevieve Suzuki into our club. John Peterson, Gen's sponsor, gave us a brief summary of Gen's many accomplishments. Gen is a family law attorney, with her own practice in San Diego. She is also the editor of the Mission Times Courier. Gen grew up in Honolulu and many of us wore our Hawaiian shirts in her honor. Gen received her journalism degree from the University of Hawaii and her law degree from California Western School of Law. She married her husband Derek in 2000, and in 2009 they welcomed their daughter Quinn to the family. Before law school, Gen was a journalist for seven years. Her jobs included copy editor for Newsday in NY, city reporter for the Star-Bulletin and arts and entertainment editor for the Honolulu Weekly. Given our commitment to encouraging children to be active and engaged readers, we were very excited to discover that Gen wrote a children's book, The Original Poi Cats on Oahu, which was published in 2005! We are so happy Gen has decided to accept our invitation to become a Kiwanian. Gen's talent, enthusiasm and energy will do much to enhance our fellowship and service to the community!

Club Meeting - February 9, 2012
This morning, as many of us drove to our meeting, we were thrilled to see our newly installed Kiwanis signs on Waring Road, between Zion and Greenbrier! Our Kiwanis International emblem now sits atop our meeting time and place sign, reminding everyone that we are actively working to make San Diego a better place to live! We are proud of all the contributions we make to our community and we hope that these signs will underscore that role. Our thanks go out to Councilmember Marti Emerald, her policy advisor, Marisa Berumen, and city traffic engineer, Steve Lopez, who helped make this all possible.
We celebrated Valentine's Day with a very special breakfast and fundraiser. Almost 60 Kiwanians, "valentines", friends and guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast, beautiful decorations and a chance to win some exciting and valuable prizes! Our guests included not only our own significant others, but also our Circle K students from SDSU, our local Boy Scout leader, who accepted a $300 donation for his troop's Blue and Gold dinner, Genevieve Suzuki, our newest recruit, and her husband, as well as a brand new guest, Tommy Dault, who has indicated he would like to learn more about who we are and what we do! Also joining us from our neighboring Kearny Mesa Kiwanis Club, were Millie Amondson and Doug Beckham, the Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor. The morning was filled with laughter, good cheer and touching moments when we introduced our special dates!
We were entertained this morning by members of the Pacific Coast Harmony, the chorus of the La Jolla Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. We were treated to the love songs they include in their Singing Valentines. Their a cappella style singing certainly set the tone for Valentine's Day!
We extend our congratulations and heartfelt thanks to our president, Luisa Moore and our secretary, Billie Moore, who organized today's breakfast and fundraiser. Thanks to their hard work and vision, this morning's celebration was both fun and successful!

Club Meeting - February 2, 2012
This morning we welcomed back Genevieve Suzuki, editor of the Mission Times Courier. We were all thrilled when John Peterson announced that Genevieve has decided to join our club! This happy news was greeted with loud applause and many smiles. Genevieve will be a welcome addition to our club! Also on hand today were Doug Beckham, the Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, his colleague Millie Amondson, and our SDSU Circle K students, Amanda, Bonnie, Danielle and Jessica.
Gary Blume's wife Amy, and daughter Molly, brought in much sought after Girl Scout cookies. Along with buying cookies for ourselves, we were happy to donate money to buy cookies for our troops overseas. Nothing says "HOME" quite like a box of thin mints!
Gene Elmore, our esteemed KOD, managed to raise some money for our administrative fund, although he generously donated a good portion of it himself! We practiced some songs about love in preparation for next weeks Valentine's breakfast and fundraiser, and as it turned out, we really needed the practice!
Our speaker was Mike Harding, CPESC, a Senior Consultant for Geosyntec, a consulting and engineering firm. Mike has 35 years of experience in erosion and sediment control, resource management, mined land reclamation, wildlife habitat development, and nonpoint source pollution control both in the United States and overseas. He has worked around the globe helping clients solve environmental problems, often using low-tech, onsite, resources. He named this technique "Aboriginality" after observing how native Australians have mastered the ability to put the materials they have on hand to good use in new and innovative ways. For example, he has taught native populations to use the plants that naturally grow in their area as a cover crop to prevent erosion, and speed up the natural process of succession. Here in California, Mike has played key roles in the emergency stabilization efforts following several major Southern California fires, including the 1991 Oakland firestorm and the 2003 and 2007 San Diego County fires. Mike has dedicated himself to protecting and improving the environment around the world and we are grateful he could share his experiences with us this morning.

Club Meeting - January 26, 2012
Another fun meeting today, with guests David and Amanda from SDSU's Circle K, Maggie from Edward Jones, Gene Elmore's granddaughter,Angie, and Genevieve Suzuki, editor of the Mission Times Courier. We were all treated to unbridled chaos as Brian Arnold led us in a three-part rendition of Row, Row, Row Your Boat, but we improved as we ended our sing-along with our trademark hit It's a Grand Old Flag!
Myron Pasichny, our KOD, stumped all of us with quotes from famous historical figures. However, our far-out guesses generated many laughs and amusing comments. Doug Grosmark aired the K-Kids promotional video he directed at Hearst. It featured his K-Kids announcing their upcoming drive to collect donations to help fight childhood cancer. Doug has advised K-Kids for twenty years and we applaud his commitment and leadership skills.
Our speaker this morning was Bunmi Esho, the director of Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement, serving K-12 students in San Diego and Imperial County since 1950, provides financial literacy education that empowers young people to own their economic success. Bunmi had us participate in a second grade activity in which students use different production strategies to simulate producing donuts for Sweet “O” Donuts. They are then able to compare unit and assembly line production methods. As we raced against the clock, the room was filled with cheers and laughter as we vied to be the group that produced the most donuts. Much to the dismay of some, our quality control inspectors rejected donuts that lacked the correct ingredients or were shoddily made! It was obvious, that this type of hands-on activity is guaranteed to capture students' interest and imagination! We certainly enjoyed our return to second grade!

Club Meeting - January 19, 2012
This morning we were happy to welcome Gary Jander, our Cal-Nev-Ha Governor-elect and David Rozul, the Circle K Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor. John Hood, from the La Mesa Lions Club, was also on hand to publicize the La Mesa Lions Club 75th Annual Speakers Contest for high school students. Our KOD was Don Lydy who tested our knowledge of architecture. It was obvious that Don is the only architect in our group! Our ignorance, however, proved to be a boon for our club's administrative fund!
Patrick Henry High School teacher, Bill Miller, helped us honor our Student of the Month, Max Fang. Mr. Miller told us about all Max's accomplishments and contributions to PHHS and to the community. Max's mom and dad were all smiles as they watched Max receive his award and dinner gift certificate. We wish Max continued success and happiness!
Today we had not one, but four guest speakers! Anamarie Lamme, Michael Elgo and Craig Yolles are three friends in business who have united with local San Diego Charity Toussaint Academy, to help homeless teens by trading goods and/or services until they get a house for Toussaint! They were joined by Tim Koehler who has over 20 years working with youth in non-profit programs. The mission of Toussaint Academy
San Diego is to assist homeless youth to reach self-sufficiency by providing a safe and stable living environment and a continuum of education and supportive services. Many of us were shocked to learn that there are approximately 2000 homeless teens in San Diego on any given day. Given this tragic statistic, we hope House for Charity will be able to successfully "trade up" to a new house for the children of Toussaint. It will be fun to follow their innovative approach to fundraising online!

Club Meeting - January 12, 2012
Following breakfast, today’s meeting began with the usual patriotic song and welcoming of guests. Visiting today was Chad Pinkelman, the cub master for Cub Scout pack 928, who gave us an update on some of the activities of the pack. Byron Newman told a couple of good jokes and the group sang a couple of pretty good old songs. John Peterson shared with us the plaque which was given to our club for our participation in the 25th Annual Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp which was held in August.
This morning we honored as the Student of the Month a fifth grade student at Hearst Elementary, Sarah Kosic. Sarah’s teacher and principal had high praise for Sarah’s good citizenship, her willingness to help at school, and her excellent grades. Sarah’s parents, Melanie and John, and her sister Rebecca were with her as she received her Good Citizen Award and a gift certificate. Our club is so happy to honor this young lady and we congratulate her and wish her great success in the future!
Today our KOD was John Chappell, who entertained us with a quiz on interesting details about Yosemite National Park and the joys of camping. All the discussion about outdoor activities was the perfect introduction for our guest speaker, Ben Reade, an avid hiker/camper and employee of Adventure 16 sporting goods store. Ben arrived wearing a large backpack full of the latest in camping and hiking gear. As he emptied the backpack, he explained the hows and whys of using each item. We were all impressed by some of the new high tech gear that is now available. Vice President Gary Blume, who was dressed in hiking clothing and carried an even larger backpack, joined in the fun with the outdoor gear. As the meeting closed, many in the group yearned to be out on a beautiful forest hiking trail!

Club Meeting - January 5, 2012
President Elect Bob Wall welcomed us this morning. We joined him in wishing our president a speedy recovery. After a delicious pancake and sausage breakfast, Gene Elmore introduced our three Students of the Month from Lewis Middle School: Carlson Temple (Grade 6), Mikayla Nash (Grade 7) and Matthew Woodruff (Grade 8). They were joined by their parents and principal, Brad Callahan. Mr. Callahan praised his students for their outstanding contributions to the Lewis school community and commended them for being very positive role models. Each student received a plaque and gift certificate for Brothers restaurant. We wish them continued success!
Kathy Butterstein, our KOD, presented a video chronicling our club's December activities, most notably, our Christmas tree fundraiser. The Christmas tree sales event offers us the opportunity to raise the operating funds for the upcoming year, and also gives us a chance to work, laugh and hang out together! Kathy also filled us in on some very interesting information about our members by asking us to guess which person she was describing. We discovered that one member has an ancestor who was the wife of a former vice president of Mexico while another is a direct descendent of William Clark (of Lewis & Clark fame). Another individual was instrumental in establishing an ecological reserve on Point Loma. As a result, he was named the Natural Resource Manager of the Year by the chief of Naval Operations and gave Bruce Babbitt, the Secretary of the Interior, a one-day tour through this endangered habitat. Famous people we have encountered include Larry Bird, Ross Perot and Tony Orlando!
Our guest speaker was Dr. Eleanora Robbins, an adjunct geology professor at SDSU. She also teaches outdoor science to Native American students on San Diego county reservations, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. When she retired from the U.S. Geological Survey, she became politically active and has now joined the Occupy San Diego movement. She has family members and friends who have been hard hit by the recent economic downturn and feels she needs to fight for these folks and the rest of the "99%". She describes what is happening in downtown San Diego to further the cause and outlined some plans for the future. Dr. Robbins gave many of us a new perspective on a movement that has generated so much controversy.

Club Meeting - December 29, 2011
Our KOD this morning, Mike Brown, welcomed us all to our last meeting of 2011. It was a very successful year and, thanks to the funds we raised selling Christmas trees, we look forward to doing even more for our community in the New Year! One way we do this is by sponsoring our local Boy Scouts. Today, Josh Jordan, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, presented his plans for his Eagle Scout project. Josh's goal is to build four park benches that can be converted to two outdoor picnic tables. These will be donated to the Zion Avenue Community Church. Some of our members donated money to help cover some of Josh's expenses, and our club will approve a donation at our next board meeting.
We were pleased to also host Doug Beckham, the Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor, as well as Ken Mentze, our tree lot chief. Doug spoke to us about the the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. This afternoon, Ken will join with other volunteers to pack the tree lot equipment and store it away until next year.
In his role as KOD, Mike challenged us to "Name That Tune." This proved to be more difficult than we anticipated, and resulted in lots of laughs, and many dollars for our admin fund. Mike introduced our newest member, Jerry Satuloff, who gave a very interesting presentation on insects. Jerry volunteers at the San Diego Zoo and has spent many hours introducing Bug House visitors to the ants, beetles, cockroaches, bees and spiders who live there. We could not help being amazed at the wide diversity exhibited by these creatures. Members were so interested in this subject, they stayed after the meeting to barrage Jerry with more questions! Some of us even came away with more respect and less distaste for Jerry's creepy, crawly friends!

Club Meeting - December 22, 2011
Vice president, Gary Blume, presided over our meeting this morning. He and Byron Newman looked sharp with their festive holiday ties! Our meeting room also helped us get into the holiday swing of things with beautiful red and green tablecloths and a happy little Christmas tree supplied by Dave Erlanson. (Yes, we realize it wasn't one of ours!)
Everyone was in a particularly good mood this morning, not just because of the holiday season, but because our Tree Lot 2011 is now officially closed after another successful year! The funds we raise each December are used to support many of our community projects for the coming year. Special thanks went to our president, Luisa Moore, who staffed the cashier booth for much of the time, Terry Shanklin and John Chandler, our tree lot chiefs, and Dave Erlanson, who personally delivered over 100 trees! It was also noted that this is a team effort and we all feel a personal sense of accomplishment for a job well-done!
KOD Mickey Zeichick shared with us some interesting information on the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah and stumped a number of us with trivia questions covering many different topics. She also had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Ashley Gardner, the executive director of the Women's Museum of California. A former local NBC television host, TV producer and Founder of a nonprofit video production company, Earth Vision Productions, Ashley has served on the County Commission on the Status of Women for 11 years. She has been active in producing the Women’s Hall of Fame since 2002. As Director she oversees the operations of the museum in all aspects and works closely with museum Board and volunteers. When Ashley finished her presentation, it was clear that the Women's Museum is a must-visit place for the New Year! To thank her for getting up so early to join us this morning, we will donate a children's book to Foster Elementary School.

Club Meeting - December 15, 2011
We were happy to welcome former member Jack Scott this morning along with Mark Harding and our tree guys, Brian Frankhouser and Kenny Mentze. Gary Blume brought along his son, Bryson, and John Peterson was happy to host Brant Honkanen, the nephew of his longtime friend.
Kevin Tostado was our KOD, and he did a great job getting us to part with our dollars as he asked us to identify holiday songs when he gave us alternative names. ("Senior citizen broadsided by a horned mammal" is better know as "Grandma got run over by a reindeer.") Many of us were so proud when we figured one out, we ended up getting fined for shouting the answer out of turn! We also got to sing a few holiday songs and laugh at Byron Newman's "Steve Wrischnik memorial joke". The best part of being in this Kiwanis family is the laughter and camaraderie we share each Thursday morning!
We also honored our Student of the Month, Tony Nguyen, from Patrick Henry High School. Vice Principal, Karla Shiminski, was on hand to add her congratulations and share with us Tony's many accomplishments and outstanding academic achievements at Patrick Henry. It is very uplifting to hear about amazing students, like Tony, and we wish him continued success as he pursues a career in medicine!
Our guest speaker was Former Lieutenant Edward R. Murphy, Jr., 2nd in Command on the USS Pueblo when it was hijacked by the North Koreans in early January 1968. He was among eighty two surviving crew members who were captured and help prisoner for 11 months. Lieutenant Murphy is author of the book Second in Command, and he shared his experience and insights with us about this difficult chapter in U.S. Naval history.

Club Meeting - December 8, 2011
This morning we were delighted to present Jerry Satuloff, our newest member, with his permanent badge. He attended a board meeting and an interclub and was able to name ten Kiwanians and give their profession. Jerry has already pitched in on many of our activities and has spent a great deal of time on our tree lot. He is a most welcome addition to our organization!
Our guests included Susan Griffin, current president of the Old San Diego Kiwanis Club. She made a request that we participate in the first "Give BIG San Diego" online giving event to benefit Hannah's House, a supervised visitation and safe exchange family center that provides a safe place where divorced/separated families can come together to resolve conflict for the sake of the children. The drive kicks-off at 7 AM on December 14th and ends 7 PM on December 15th. We commend Susan for her commitment to the children in our community who are in need of support during a difficult time in their lives.
We welcomed our Student of the Month from Hearst Elementary school, Steven Gantney, and his parents and sister. His teacher and principal both told us how much they respect Steven for not just his academic achievements, but also for his desire to always do the right thing and be a good citizen. They thanked him for being such a good role model for his fellow classmates. Steven graciously thanked us for his award and for the gift certificate for Brothers restaurant. Congratulations, Steven!
Our guest speaker was Dave Cummins. Dave told us that when he fell on hard times during the economic downturn, his child's school community came together to support him and his family with food and Christmas gifts. This act of kindness made a lasting impression on Dave, and when he recovered financially, he felt a need to help others. That led him to partner with his Canyon Springs church and the Children's Heritage Foundation. The Children’s Heritage Foundation is a Christian organization that serves disadvantaged children and families around the world addressing areas of education, health, economic development, and faith. Dave and his team travel to Haiti twice a year to help improve the lives of the many orphans living there in poverty. They builds picnic tables so the children will not have to sit on the dirt to eat, as well as reinforced buildings to safely house the children. They teach the Haitians how to get clean drinking water, and provide them with much needed support. We collected school supplies that Dave will bring with him on his next trip in January. We were impressed by Dave's commitment to help children who have very little in life, but continue to smile, laugh and play. Dave's organization makes those smiles just a little bit brighter!

Club Meeting - December 1, 2011
It was with sad hearts we gathered together this morning, acutely aware of the loss of our dear, long-time member, Dorothy Dougherty. Dorothy, who passed away last Saturday, will be sorely missed. Her empty seat made us each reflect on all the love, laughter and commitment Dorothy brought to our club and to the lives of all who knew her. We will assemble tomorrow at her memorial service to pay our respects and remember a wonderful life, fully lived.
We were happy to welcome Wayne Butcher, who brought us a shipment of newly cut Nordman, Noble and Plantation Christmas trees from Oregon. After our meeting, our tree lot stars, Brian Frankhouser, Ken Mentze, Terry Shanklin and president Luisa Moore took part in the offloading of these amazingly fresh trees. This is a demanding job since some of the trees are 10 feet tall! We expect the tree lot to be very busy this weekend, so we will need all hands on board!
Our KOD, Ross Mallette, welcomed our other guests, David Rozul and Amanda Willis, from SDSU Circle K. He then proceeded to stump a lot of us with questions about our hometown football team, the Chargers. Although many of us are well aware of the current sad state of affairs, we were at a loss when asked about past glories and past history.

Club Meeting – November 17, 2011
Following our delicious Thursday morning breakfast, guests were introduced. Today we welcomed three members of the Torrey Pines Kiwanis and three members of the SDSU Circle K Club. We all enjoyed a slideshow of the Circle K Fall Training Conference held in snowy Sonora, CA on November 3-4 presented by Amanda Willis.
Student of the Month award for Patrick Henry High School was presented by Gene Elmore. We were pleased to honor Marcos Olascoago as an outstanding student with a Good Citizen Award for his involvement in many youth groups and peer mediation. Marcos’ mother, sister, and Mr. Stephens, PHHS Dean of Students, were on hand to share in his celebration. Along with his award, Marcos was given a gift certificate to treat his family to dinner. Our congratulations to this fine young man!
Club announcements and sign-up sheets for the upcoming tree lot assignments preceded KOD Norm Townsend’s quiz of strange facts and fiction. Norm collected a nice sum of money for the treasury while entertaining the crowd.
Today’s guest speaker was Chase Peckham, Director of Community Outreach for Debtwave Credit Counseling, Inc., a non-profit organization devoted to educating its community on credit, debt, and other finance-related issues. The company puts on free seminars and consultations to help teach kids, youth and adults about handling personal finances, creating household budgets, and obtaining important financial skills for today’s economy. Mr. Peckham’s personal story and stories of professional athletes and financial missteps gave us all something to think about with regard to personal finances. See Debtwave’s website for further information: www.debtwave.com

Club Meeting - November 10, 2011
Our KOD this morning was John Peterson. He welcomed back one of our favorite former Circle K friends, Ari Chessen, who has been busy traveling, working at a daycare center and planning future adventures! Other guests included current Circle K members David Rozul, Amanda Willis and Tatiana Caecedo who thanked us for helping them collect clothes for the needy.
In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, our tables were decked out in red, white and blue, and Terry Shanklin gave a reading on the American flag, our most powerful symbol of freedom, liberty and justice. Our patriotic song was led by our chef, Theresa Hudson, who is not just a wiz in the kitchen, but also a very accomplished vocal performer! She definitely enabled us to improve our rendition of "God Bless America." John used Theresa's song to segue into questions about song titles that stumped a good many of us!
A big focus this morning was the tree lot. We all hope to gather at the corner of Zion and Glenroy at 8 AM Saturday morning to set up the plumbing, electric service, tarps and sales booth in preparation for the arrival of the first load of trees on November 22. Our broker advised that the trees are looking GREAT. Lots of rain and a number of freezes really helped! Our trees will be the freshest in town because we place each tree in a stand and keep it watered until it is ready for the ride home. The sale of over 1,000 trees, in four weeks, is a huge enterprise, but it serves as our chief fundraiser. The monies raised here fund most of our community service projects and events for the entire year.
Vice president, Gary Blume introduced his good friend, Tom Chapman, who gave a very interesting presentation on surfing. Tom has been an avid surfer for most of his life and has travelled all over the world in search of perfect waves. He is also a member of the the Swami’s Surfing Association Inc. (SSA), which was established in 1964, as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization by local surfers for the purpose of support and improving the beach community and supporting environmental issues. (To learn more about this organization, click here.) For those of us who thought all surfboards are the same, Tom explained that different designs are needed for different surfers, different wave conditions and different ability levels. This information will came in handy when we decide to purchase a board for ourselves or for our grandchildren!

Club Meeting – November 3, 2011
Following a delicious breakfast of ham and eggs, country fries, and buttermilk biscuits, we conducted a very busy meeting this morning. The many guests included five members from the SDSU Circle K Club. Amanda Willis announced that Circle K is collecting clothing and blankets which their club will deliver on November 12 to Project Embrace which helps the homeless in San Diego.
We were honored to have Jana Kolarikova and Jack Scott return for a visit. Our long-time members were very excited to see both of these former club members.
Doug Grosmark presented the Student of the Month award to Hearst Elementary student Kaili Glasser. Kaili is an outstanding fifth grade student and we were very impressed with her many academic and personal accomplishments. Her parents and teacher were with her to share in this proud moment. Along with her award, she was given a gift certificate to take her family to a celebratory dinner. Congratulations to Kaili!
After announcements of upcoming events, Dave Erlanson acted as KOD and collected a nice sum for our treasury. He then introduced Sheila Henry, an expert in helping individuals achieve greater happiness in their lives. Speaker, counselor and author, Ms. Henry has worked in the field of psychology for over 25 years and has designed programs which enable clients to clarify their goals and overcome self limiting beliefs that might impede their success and happiness. Her valuable recommendations and life lessons can be seen on her website www.HappyAsYourHound.com, a name inspired by the wonderful dogs she has in her life.

Club Meeting - October 27, 2011
We were greeted with a TREAT this morning, thanks to Bob Frankhouser. He brought in Halloween pumpkins, plates and other decorations to get us in the mood for the upcoming holiday! This also gave Doug Grosmark, Hearst K Kids advisor, the opportunity to remind our members that his students will be collecting any and all leftover Halloween candy, which they will package and send to our troops overseas. His Hearst students will also be collecting donations for the Kiwanis Project Eliminate the goal of which is to raise $110 million to help eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus, which affects nearly 129 million mothers and their future babies in 39 countries. These are two important ways for kids to enjoy Halloween and help others around the globe!
We had a special KOD this morning. She is Victoria Hudson and she is our chef! Each Thursday morning she congers up all kinds of tasty breakfast treats. This morning, in keeping with our theme, she prepared delicious pumpkin pancakes, along with sausages and bacon. For those who prefer lighter fare, we also offer yogurt, cold cereal and fruit. She checked to see if "We are as smart as a Kiwanis chef," and we didn't perform very well! Who would have guessed that the secret to her French toast is OJ, and that for some menu items she needs 8 dozen eggs and 8 pounds of bacon. This was a great opportunity for us to get to interact with Victoria and let her know how much we appreciate her efforts!
Our guest speaker this morning was Jane Wesley Brooks, Attorney at Law. Before Jane became a lawyer, she was a high-end horticulture designer in Redondo Beach. She decided to go back to school to study medicine, but upon finishing her coursework, decided to go into law! Through the years, Jane has encountered all kinds of interesting people. She kept us fully engaged with her stories of celebrities she has met, such as Whoopie Goldberg and Arnold Palmer, as well as judges and clients she has represented. She emphasized the need for a trial lawyer to be on time for court, always be ready to think fast on his or her feet, and above all, not let the bad guys see you sweat!

Club Meeting - October 20, 2011
President Luisa Moore welcomed our friends, Amanda Willis from Circle K and Maggie Conway from Edward Jones. It was one of those crazy meetings where nothing seemed to go as expected! Maggie overslept, our chefs prepared a quiche, which took 30 minutes longer to cook than expected, and the Patrick Henry High School staff had the wrong date for today's presentation! But it all worked out in the end: Maggie made it on time, breakfast, when it was served, was delicious, and our Student of the Month presentation occurred just a little later than usual, when everyone arrived!
We were pleased to honor Patrick Henry High Student of the Month, Jasmine Nicosia. Jasmine's mom, Norma, was all smiles as she watched her daughter receive her plaque and restaurant gift certificate. According to Master Sargent Brick, Jasmine is an outstanding student and ROTC member who has maintained a 4.0 average while dealing with many difficult issues. Jasmine credits her success with the support she receives from the ROTC program. Ms. Shiminski, PHHS vice principal, was also present to offer her congratulations and to thank Jasmine for being such an inspiring student. We join her in offering our congratulations to Jasmine.
Our KOD was Terry Shankilin. In spite of the mixed up schedule this morning, he was able to perform his duties admirably, soliciting our popular "happy/sad dollars" and asking a few political questions that left some of us moaning! Speaking of moaning, Brian Arnold tried to help us out with a few jokes that actually made us realize that our weekly jokester, Byron Newman, really isn't all that bad!
Our guest this morning was David Berg. David entertained us with his juggling skills and attempted to show our own Doug Grosmark how simple it was to juggle. It soon became evident that Doug begged to differ as he dropped ball after ball, although he received high marks for persistence. After being taunted by Gary Blume for his lack of coordination, Doug demanded Gary try it. Much to everyone's amazement, Gary stepped right up and juggled with great aplomb! Little did we realize that he had done this before and was up late last night practicing! It wouldn't come as a surprise if some of our members went home and gave some lemons a toss!

Club Meeting - October 13, 2011
President Luisa Moore welcomed our many guests this morning. Our Circle K regulars, Amanda Willis and Tanya Caecedo, joined us, as did our Lions friends, Manny Demitri and John Hood. The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club arrived for an interclub and extended an invitation to join them for one of their last meetings high atop the La Jolla Hotel. Sadly the restaurant is scheduled to close next month.
We were pleased to honor Hearst Elementary Student of the Month, Emelia Archuleta with a plaque and restaurant gift certificate. On hand to celebrate were Emilia's parents, sister and brother. Teacher, Mrs. Vasquez, and principal, Mrs. Jorgensen, complimented Emelia on her wonderful personality and her willingness to help other students. She is a role model for her classmates and Mrs. Jorgensen thanked her for helping to make Hearst a great place to learn and grow! Mrs. Archuleta was so pleased that Amelia earned this honor by "being who she is!"
Our KOD was Gene Elmore. He had a fun time soliciting happy and sad dollars and levying fines on fellow members in an attempt to keep us all on the straight and narrow! We were also pleased that Billie Moore has met all the requirements for full membership in our organization. Her daughter and sponsor, Luisa, presented her with her official Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis badge. Billie has become very involved in club affairs and has even been elected to be this year's club secretary! Congratulations, Billie!
Our guests this morning were from New Entra Casa. This is residential facility for women ex-offenders who are being released from jail. The house is managed by volunteers and accommodates six women. They have also added 5 more cottages where women can reside with their children upon completion of the program. They offer individual and group counseling and give their residents the skills needed to be successful in the real world. They are able to boast a 95% success rate because they bring stability and hope to women who had none. Our speaker, Kim, is a former resident who was able to turn her life around, earn a degree in counseling and now works for the organization she believes gave her a new lease on life. She introduced us to Miranda and Tanya who are currently in the program. Their life stories actually brought some of our members to tears. We were witness to two lives saved by this incredible program. To find our more about this amazing "safe harbor" and to see how you can help, click here.

Club Meeting - October 6, 2011
This morning we celebrated our new Kiwanis year with a special steak and egg breakfast feast. Luisa Moore, our new president, continued our long tradition of meetings that start and end on time, are very informational and generate many laughs and a wonderful sense of camaraderie.
Luisa announced that our club received two 2010-2011 Division 21awards! The First Runner Up Interclub Award is given to acknowledge a club whose members visited numerous Kiwanis functions held by other Kiwanis clubs in our community. We owe Boyd Sauter, last year's interclub chairperson, a round of applause for encouraging us (a lot!) to make the extra effort. We were also awarded the very prestigious Division 21 Performance Award for the many community service projects we participated in this year. Although we don't do these activities for fame and glory, it is gratifying to have our efforts recognized by our peers.
Our loyal Circle K contingent was on hand to enjoy our special breakfast and to remind us of their K-Family Softball Game on Saturday, October 8. (For more information, see our "News" section.) We also welcomed Debbie Yost's neighbor, Barbara Rene, who has returned for a second visit and may decide to join our club! George Butterstein was back after having his knee replaced two weeks ago, and brought his NY friend and role model, George Schiller, who had his knee replaced three months ago. Jerry Satuloff and Billie Moore named ten members and their occupations, bring them closer to full membership.
Myron Pasichny led us in some pretty flat songs, but we recovered nicely as we belted out our finale, "It's a Grand Old Flag!" KOD Debbie, managed to raise some funds by asking a wide range of trivia questions on subjects such as hamburgers, koalas, rock bands and donuts. She claimed she was inspired in the middle of the night to select these questions. We worried she might just be sleep deprived!
To start the year off right, our comittee chairpersons gave a short presentation on their committees' past accomplishments and future plans. It looks like we are in for an exciting and productive year!

Club Meeting - September 29, 2011
This morning marked Pat Jordan's last meeting as club president. Luisa Jordan will take over the reins as our new year begins October 1. Our loyal Circle K contingent was on hand to enjoy a good breakfast, lots of laughs and the company of good friends. Tatiana reminded us of their K-Family Softball Game on Saturday, October 8th. For more information on this, see our "News" section.
We were delighted to welcome Mi La, this year's first Student of the Month from Patrick Henry High School. On hand to see her accept her award and gift certificate were her mom, Huong Nguy, her dad, Duc La, her sister, Pearlie La, and vice principal Jim Good. Jim commended Mi on being an outstanding student and affirmed that Mi is most deserving of this honor. As Mi graciously thanked our club members for this award, it was evident that she has what it takes to be successful in life! We wish her and her family all the best!
KOD, Kathy Butterstein, managed to raise some funds by asking silly jokes about dogs, in recognition of the fact that our speakers today were from Leashes 4 Life International Assistance Dogs. This unique organization enables the physically challenged to train their own Assistance dogs. Speakers Irina Lockwood-Dvries and Nancy Walsh explained how their program places a temperament-tested puppy or adult dog (they do not enroll dogs older than 1 year) directly into the home of the disabled person. The puppy is trained by the disabled student or a family member in a unique two year program, utilizing positive and rewarding techniques for both dog and trainer. The goal of this organization Is to provide highly skilled autism service dogs, hearing dogs, medical response dogs, seizure alert dogs and seizure response dogs. Tagging along for the presentation were three veteran assist dogs to help illustrate how these dogs are dependable, loyal and loving as they carry out their duties. Club Meeting – September 22, 2011
Today’s meeting started with the introduction of this school year’s first Student of the Month. Hearst Elementary student Uyen Nhi Nguyen was honored for her citizenship and academics at her school. Her teacher, Laura Peele, along with her mother, sister, and aunt shared her special moment when Gene Elmore presented Uyen with her award and a gift certificate. Congratulations, Uyen!
Guests today included new Lieutenant Governor Doug Beckham and four members of the San Diego State University Circle K Club. Circle K will be having a fundraiser at Coldstone Creamery on Sept. 28, and we are all invited. Tatiana Caicedo announced that there are plans to have a Circle K and Kiwanis family softball game on Oct. 8 and more details will be available soon. Signup sheets for breakfast committee and Meals on Wheels delivery were passed to the membership. Mickey Zeichick served as the Kiwanian of the Day and entertained and quizzed the members with trivia about automobiles, old and new. She was able to collect a nice sum of money for our treasury.
Today’s guest speaker, Jenee Peevy, came to us from the San Diego County Office of Education/ Juvenile Court & Community Schools (JCCS) Division. Ms. Peevy’s daily routine is providing and assisting families and students with resources needed to manage their daily lives. She explained how the juvenile court school system works for at-risk children. With her background in Business Administration, Criminal Justice Administration and Social Work Administration, Ms. Peevy has received many honors for her service to youth and families in San Diego including 2010 Outstanding Black Community Member Award and Classified Employee of the Year for the Department of Education/JCCS. She serves as president of the Association of African American Educators and on many other committees and foundations. This very busy woman is an excellent speaker who makes a very important impact on our community.

Club Meeting - September 15, 2011
President Pat Jordan was unable to join us this morning, so Luisa Moore stepped in to conduct our meeting. This will be good practice for her since she will be installed as our new president this Saturday! She introduced our charter member, Bob Frankhouser, who had the honor of being today's KOD. Since our guest speakers are involved with traffic control, he quizzed us on the new traffic violation fines that recently went into effect. It made us aware that we must be mindful of our responsibilities as we navigate our roads and highways...or else!
We were happy to welcome SDSU Circle K's Vice- President, Amanda Willis, K Family Representative, Tatiana Caecedo, and David Rozul, Circle K Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor. David recently returned from visiting Circle K and Kiwanis clubs in Hawaii. He claimed it was a tough job, but he sacrificed! He obviously received no sympathy from us! We did make sure, however, that he left early so he could make his 8 o'clock class!
Our guest speakers were Marvin Gartenbaum and Lynn Grant who are Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP) Traffic Volunteers. RSVP traffic division members provide assistance to the Officers of the SDPD and in particular the Officers of Traffic Division in their efforts to control traffic on the streets and roadways of the city and to promote traffic safety. Their duties include traffic control at accidents, fires, etc.; abandoned vehicle abatement; disabled parking citations; search for Hit and Run vehicles; DUI and Seatbelt checkpoints; speed and stop sign surveys; roadway deficiency reports; and vehicle violation citation sign-offs. We were impressed by their commitment to the citizens of San Diego and we applaud their efforts! To learn more about RSVP, click here.

Club Meeting - September 8, 2011
Our KOD this morning was our esteemed president, Pat Jordan. He managed to collect donations to our administrative fund AND insult us all at the same time. Needless to say, he generated both dollars and laughs! In light of the record-breaking temperatures around the county, Nancy Johnson led us in a frosty rendition of "Jingle Bells," even if it is difficult to imagine us "dashing through the snow" on the 8! Tony Haas rolled in on his nifty scooter. He is not letting foot surgery slow him down!
Our visitors included Ross Mallet's lovely wife, Patty, SDSU Circle K members Scott Frame, president, Amanda Willis, vice-president,Tatiana Caecedo, K Family Representative, and Brian Zang, treasurer. Circle K is off to a great start this year with non-stop community service events already scheduled! One of our members asked when they possibly had time to study!
A high point of the morning was the induction of Jerry Satuloff into our club. His sponsor, George Butterstein, presented Jerry with his Kiwanis pin and temporary badge. To become a permanent member, he must attend a board meeting (which he has already done!), attend an interclub with a neighboring Kiwanis Club and identify at least ten of our members by name and occupation. After Jerry was formally welcomed by Larry McLeland, every member rose and came forward to personally welcome Jerry.
We were pleased to welcome our guest speakers from ElderHelp. Carrie McClellan is the Member Outreach Manager, and Anneliese Wells is the Volunteer Recruiter. To learn more about the important role ElderHelp plays in our community, click here.

Club Meeting - September 1, 2011
Our KOD this morning was Doug Grossmark. He made Byron Newman's jokes look better and better as he quizzed us on children's riddles. (What's black and white and pink all over? An embarrassed zebra!) Myron Pasichny's music direction actually enabled us to make it through all three verses of a song, although our "It's a Grand Old Flag" rendition left a bit to be desired!
Jerry Satuloff joined us and turned in his membership application. He will be a welcome new member. Other visitors included SDSU Circle K members Amanda Willis, vice-president, and Tatiana Caecedo, K Family Representative, as well as Doug Beckham, the incoming Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor. Maggie Conway appeared with forms to be signed so her employer, Edward Jones, can continue to manage our Foundation account. Even though she completed her business in a few minutes, she was glad she could stay for the entire meeting, as were we!
Our speaker was Karen Cook, Development Director for Home of Guiding Hands. The Home of Guiding Hands is a non-profit public benefit corporation that has been providing quality residential support and training services to individuals with developmental disabilities for more than 40 years. Located in San Diego East County, HGH offers a wide range of services including community living, independent living, respite care and senior care planning. Their goal is to help clients achieve their greatest potential. Karen's presentation was very informative and one member shared that his past interaction with an HGH resident was a "Kiwanis moment", that solidified his desire to dedicate himself to community service! Club Meeting – August 25, 2011
Our hungry breakfast crowd enjoyed ham and eggs and all the trimmings as well as a good dose of laughter this morning. Byron Newman delighted us with an almost funny joke, for which he later paid a $1 “fine." Boyd Sauter served as Kiwanian of the Day and cheerfully collected “fines” related to interclub attendance and the recent district convention. Billie Moore, our newest member, enjoyed the honor of carrying the coffee can.
Today we were pleased to have as our guest speaker retired U.S. Navy Captain Cal Swanson and his wife, Nell. Cal richly recounted his early family life and growing up with 4H clubs, his education and entry into military service, and his experiences as a fighter pilot during the Korean War. He trained and served as a jet plane test pilot, and rose in the ranks of aircraft carrier operations, serving aboard the USS Roosevelt and the USS Midway and others. Above all, he had a very exciting and satisfying career with the Navy. Cal is a fellow Kiwanian and is a member of the La Jolla Kiwanis club.

Club Meeting - August 18, 2011
This morning we were glad to welcome our good friend David Rozul, the Circle K Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor. He brought along SDSU's new officers, David Frame, president, Amanda Willis, vice-president, and Allie White, secretary. Their enthusiasm and energy at 7 o'clock in the morning tells us that this year's Circle K Club will be better than ever!
Ross Mallette was our KOD and entertained us with trivia questions that elicited answers that had us all laughing out loud! Also with us was Kim O'Hara, the lunch director for the Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp. This year marked the 23rd time our club provided a BBQ lunch to her campers and their families. As Kim thanked us for our participation, John Peterson, our event coordinator, assured her that the pleasure was definitely all ours!
Our guest speaker was Chuck Price, a former Navy SEAL, who is now chaplain to the San Diego and El Cajon Police Departments. He was able to shed light on the very real human side of police officers and the daily physical and emotional challenges they face each day. His insights into the stress his officers face and how he helps them cope, was very enlightening. Chuck focuses on each officer's individual beliefs and needs as he counsels them, and if requested, helps them deal with often difficult and complex situations. We are grateful for the support he gives his officers, which in turn, benefits our entire community.

KOD Brian Arnold had a busy agenda this morning. He welcomed guests Jim & Melanie Nickels from the Ocean Beach Kiwanis Club, Norm Pasqual from the Clairemont Hills Kiwanis Club and Doug Beckham, the incoming Cal-Nev-Ha Lieutenant Governor. Brian managed to enhance our coffers as he honored our members who are present or past teachers and military personnel. His exuberance and sense of humor made us forget that it was still very early in the morning!
We were very happy to welcome a new member to our club, Billie Moore. Billie is a life-long resident of San Diego and is the mother of our president elect Luisa Moore. After Billie received her Kiwanis pin and temporary badge, we each came forward and personally welcomed her to our club!
Our guest speaker was Jeff Isaac, Esq., also known as "The Lawyer in Blue Jeans." Isaac is the founder and principal attorney at The Lawyer in Blue Jeans Group. He is a popular media personality who imparts his unique style and lighthearted perspective through the airwaves as host of 760 KFMB AM's "The Lawyer in Blue Jeans," a talk radio program which airs weekly throughout San Diego County. He also makes weekly appearances on KUSI TV Channel 9. He has a refreshing view of the legal system with the "common man's" interest at heart. He gave an energetic and invigorating talk about the importance of Living Trusts in estate planning. He explained why it is so important for all of us to plan now for our family's financial future. For more information about Jeff, click here to check his website. As a token of our appreciation, we will donate a children's book to the Foster Elementary School library in Jeff's name.

Club Meeting - August 4, 2011
This morning we welcomed guests David Rozul, Wanda Elmore, Steve Rios and Shannon Frick. Davis is the Circle K Paradise Valley Lieutenant Governor and is looking forward to a busy year at SDSU. Wanda is the wife of member Gene Elmore and we are always glad when she can join us for breakfast. Steve is a friend and former employee of member Doug Grosmark and is getting ready to start his law career in Reno. We wish him luck in his new profession. Shannon is the Special Events Coordinator for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. We are glad she decided to visit with us today and hope she will come back again soon.
Our KOD, John Chappell, introduced our guest speaker, Mike Younghusband, who made an amazing 1,200 mile hike down the Baja peninsula. Mike made the trek with his recalcitrant donkey, aptly named Don Kay, and his faithful dog Solo Vino. The journey took Mike almost six months to complete, and he shared with us some of his exciting and sometimes scary adventures through a beautiful but unforgiving land. To view photos of Mike's trip click here.
Although we meet at what some call "an ungodly hour", the camaraderie, laughter and interesting guests make us all glad we are members of this excellent organization!

Also joining us were Gary Blume's son Bryson, Mike Brown's wife Kathy and Dave Erlanson's wife Carolyn. Our KOD was Norm Townsend who entertained us with trivia questions that elicited a lot of laughs and a lot of dollars!
Our guest speaker this morning was John Furtak, the son of Dave and Carolyn Erlanson, and Deputy Commander of the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) Team here in San Diego. John explained that BORSTAR Teams are highly specialized units capable of responding to emergency search and rescue situations anywhere in the United States. These teams are made up of Border Patrol Agents who volunteer to go beyond their regular duties and undergo a highly specialized regimen consisting of training in physical fitness and training in various other disciplines, including medical skills, technical rescue, navigation, communication, swiftwater rescue, and air operations. BORSTAR's primary mission is to respond to incidents involving distressed agents and migrants along the border. These rescues vary in difficulty from simply locating victims and providing them with water to complex rescues requiring agents to rappel into remote canyons to assist victims and extract them by helicopter. To learn more about BORSTAR, go to borderstar.com.
We were all impressed by the high degree of training, dedication and courage it takes to be a member of this important government organization. To thank John for his informative and interesting presentation, we will donate a children's book in his name to the Foster Elementary School Library.

Our KOD, Mickey Zeichick, was on hand to welcome long-term friends, Maggie and Manny, who seem to like our company, and a number of new faces. Debbie Yost managed to drag her guests from Germany, Doreen and Heiko Mueller and Doris Hruby out of bed so they, too, could enjoy a crazy Kiwanian breakfast...American style! We bid fond farewell to president Pat Jordan's cousin, Elodie Sierro, who is returning home to Switzerland this week.
We were very happy to officially welcome new member Brian Arnold to our Kiwanis family and present him with his Kiwanis pin, new-member badge and certificate. Our KOD this morning was Dan Yelvington. He welcomed back our newest recruit, Brian Arnold, who brought a very special guest with him, his two-month old daughter, Bridgett Marie. Other guests included Nancy Taylor, a former member, Maggie Conway from Edward Jones, her guest Susan Malotte from Keller Williams Realty, and Circle K Vice President, Amanda Willis.
Our guest speaker was Vince Meehan, art director for the Mission Times Courier. The MTC has updated its look this year, and now covers many more local stories and community events. It is a 30,000 circulation community newspaper serving the communities of Allied Gardens, College, Del Cerro, Fletcher Hills, Grantville and Rolando. Vince also told us about his company's latest venture, the La Mesa Courier. This has been a welcome development for the La Mesa community that has been without a local paper for some time. Vince and his colleagues hope to serve as the "voice of the neighborhood" and encourage their readers to contribute letters and emails detailing their take on local issues.

Reginald Coleman (6th grade), Malea Casillas (7th grade) and Diego Hernandez (8th grade), are outstanding students who are actively involved in the academic, service and athletic life in their school community. We were pleased to honor these students with a framed award certificate and a gift card to an area restaurant.
We also welcomed Rod Houdyshel, Unit Commander for the Boy Scouts of America, who presented us with the 2011 Charter for Cub Scout Pack 928. This will enable us to continue our support of this active organization. Rod also presented Cubmaster Jerry Williamson with two awards for their outstanding program. We wish to congratulate Jerry and his pack!
Our guest speaker was Kathi Anderson, the executive director and cofounder of Survivors of Torture, International (SURVIVORS). SURVIVORS is a nonprofit agency based in San Diego, that serves survivors of politically-motivated torture and their family members. It educates the public and professional communities about the effects of torture and works toward the abolition of torture. It is estimated that at least 11,000 survivors of torture live in San Diego County. This is an astonishing statistic that is not widely recognized. We appreciate Kathi's dedication to this most worthwhile cause. Our club will donate a children's book to Foster Elementary School in Kathi's honor.

It currently serves 350 students. Laura presented our fellow Kiwanian, Dr. Byron Newman, with an award for his service providing free optometric screening of Monarch students.
To thank Laura for the informative talk and her amazing commitment to the children she serves, we donated a children's book to the Monarch library in her name. To learn more about the role Monarch School plays in our community click here.

Club Meeting - May 19, 2011
Today our meeting was planned and presided over by the members of the Lewis Middle School Builders Club. The students did a great job ensuring business was successfully conducted, guests were made to feel welcome and lots of smiles and laughs were enjoyed by all!
We welcomed our Student of the Month from Patrick Henry High School, Cassidy McClure, her family, and Patrick Henry Dean of Students, Jo McGlin. Ms. McGlin had high praise for Cassidy, a sentiment echoed by Cassidy's teachers and peers. Cassidy's hard work, dedication to her studies and commitment to her community have served her well and will ensure success in the future.
During the fund-raising portion of our program, the students auctioned off adorable stuffed animals and quizzed us to see if we are as smart as an 8th grader. Unfortunately, our first-time visitor, Brian Arnold, discovered the answer was "No!" Brian wasn't alone, and we realized we need a refresher course if we expect to keep up with this amazing group of young people!

Club Meeting - April, 28, 2011
As we arrived bright and early this morning, we were greeted by two beautiful American flag banners. Our thanks go out to charter member, Bobby Frankhouser, for these welcoming symbols of the American spirit! Dan Yelvington and Nancy Johnson honored Bobby during the sing-a-long portion of our meeting by leading us in a rousing rendition of "Bobby Face" sung to the tune of "Baby Face"!
Today, we were treated to a presentation by Gary Shepard, a retired NBC and ABC network news broadcast journalist. A veteran war correspondent, Gary won an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his live reporting from Baghdad at the start of the first Persian Gulf war. During his 35-year career, Gary also reported on many of the major news events of our time. Among them: the Vietnam War, the student rebellion at Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, China, the drug wars in Colombia, and the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska.
After he retired, Gary lost his house in a wildfire and decided a sailboat would be his new home. He chronicles his sea adventures that took him from San Diego, through the Panama Canal and on to the Virgin Islands in his book, A News Correspondent Goes Sailing. Along the way, he had time to reminisce about some of the major news stories he covered during his career and shares these with his readers. Gary has led a fascinating life, and we are grateful he could be with us this morning!
