Miracle Mile of Quarters - May 5, 2012

On Saturday, May 5, the Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis Club participated in the Miracle Mile of Quarters Saturday. The Miracle Mile of Quarters project to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital has been an ongoing Kiwanis project since 1986.  Since that time, Kiwanis has raised almost two and one half million dollars, mostly in the form or quarters, in collection jars located at businesses in the San Diego area. The Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens is proud to say that we have supported the effort from the beginning. This year, with the help of our members and local businesses we were able to present a check for $3413.66 to Rady Children’s Hospital. The check presentation was made on May 5 at the hospital during the annual Miracle Mile of Quarters Day. On that day, students from the Kiwanis Service Leadership Youth groups gathered to spread thousands of quarters along a red carpet representing the “Miracle Mile”. Their wonderful artwork was both ingenious and representative of the many facets of our Kiwanis family. Patrick Henry High School Key Club and SDSU Circle K members enjoyed a fun morning creating their quarter art. For the second year in a row, Circle K won first place in their division for their imaginative design!

We would like to thank the businesses that have helped us over the years in our Miracle Mile of Quarters campaign.  We appreciate their generous customers who make our donation possible.

Kiwanis One Day - April 21, 2012

Kiwanis One Day is a day when all Kiwanis Clubs around the world perform a service project in their own communities, resulting in an international spirit of service that inspires people worldwide.

“Watershed Avengers" service project at Alexander Hamilton Elementary School in City Heights

Several hundred volunteers from community, corporate, and youth groups were on a mission to help save the unique habitat of City Heights' Swan Canyon, adjacent to Hamilton Elementary School.  Partnered with Ocean Discovery Institute and San Diego Canyonlands, several hundred young people helped repair trails and removed non-native, invasive plants and trash from the habitat. Members of SDSU Circle K and Key Clubs from all over San Diego pitched in with enthusiasm and youthful spirit.

It was the great pleasure of Kiwanis Grantville-Allied Gardens to team with Kiwanis Club of Tierrasanta to provide lunches for the hard-working hungry volunteers.  Hamburgers, hot dogs, and trimmings were well received by all. The chuck wagon grill had a good workout, as did the Kiwanians who helped with this very satisfying project.

The 64th Annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival - March 3, 2012

The 64th Annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach, took place Saturday, March 3rd. Members of our Granville-Allied Gardens Club arrived early with our hotdog grill and began serving the hungry kite fliers free hotdogs, animal crackers and drinks provided by the OB Kiwanis Club. The sky was alight with the beautiful kites the children decorated with the help of student volunteers. A beautiful day, happy children and an opportunity to serve our community...Priceless!

Kiwanians Lend a Helping Hand at Hearst Fiesta Lunch – March 2, 2012

“Serving the Children of the World” at this fun event - a group of our club members helped serve lunch at Phoebe Hearst Elementary school on this beautiful, warm March day.  Hearst Elementary is the home of our sponsored K-Kids Club led by Dr. Doug Grosmark. Kiwanis members had a great time handing out a delicious Mexican-style lunch to several hundred school children, who enjoyed this fiesta while listening to lively party music. Some of the Kiwanians were even seen trying to dance the Mexican Hat Dance!

New Entra Casa Helped by Kiwanis

New Entra Casa, a residential facility for women ex-offenders, is one of the most compassion inspiring programs to which our club lends a hand.  Providing a “safe harbor from a restless sea,” the facility provides a safe environment for women to return to society and teaches valuable skills for success in the real world.  Individual and group counseling helps bring stability and hope to women who desperately want to turn their lives around. Receiving little or no public funding, their program depends largely on donations from community groups and client fees from the women who have family members able to afford to pay some of the cost of their stay. The women help raise funds by recycling, car washes, garage sales, and operation of a thrift shop which also provides job training. Kiwanis financial contributions and generous donations of labor and materials to help repair and update the facilities have been greatly needed and appreciated in these difficult financial times. See more in the Mission Times Courier.

The annual Fall Tea was held at New Entra Casa on November 20 and was well attended by members of our club. Some of the women who are currently living at NEC told their compelling life stories and the positive impact this program has made in their lives. Piano and vocal recital by one of the talented residents was followed by refreshments and social hour. Included in this event was a request to "fill the porch" with pantry items,  personal care and household products which are greatly needed at the facilities. The Kiwanians and community members who attended were rewarded with the personal satisfaction that comes from doing something really helpful for others. To find out more about this amazing "safe harbor" and to see how you can help, see website.

Stuff N Thangs, a thrift store and career training site, is located at 3773 30th Street.  Donations of used clothing and merchandise are happily accepted.  Call 294-4526 for further details.

Kiwanis Volunteers Deliver Meals-on-Wheels

Each day, the largest volunteer network in America delivers more than a million meals to seniors struggling with hunger.  Along with those meals, Meals-on-Wheels volunteers deliver cheerful greetings and in some cases provide a much needed social contact to senior clients. Our Kiwanis Club volunteers help with the delivery of meals in our area on Thursdays.  Working as teams, each pair of volunteers spends about two hours on their scheduled delivery day, taking a turn every few weeks.  All of the Kiwanians who work with Meals-on-Wheels feel the satisfaction and reward that comes from helping this most benevolent organization.  For more information about Meals-on-Wheels, click here.

District Convention (DCON) – August 18-20, 2011

San Diego’s Town and Country Resort and Convention Center was the setting for the 91st Annual District Convention.  Welcomed to San Diego were many members from the California, Nevada and Hawaii Kiwanis clubs, also known as Cal-Nev-Ha District, as well as members from Kiwanis clubs throughout the country.   Many interesting and educational seminars on a wide variety of subjects were presented on Friday and Saturday.  General  sessions, receptions, exhibit booths, training, dinners, award ceremonies, to name a few of the many events, filled the days with valuable experiences and fun for everyone.  Saturday’s large Inter-club luncheon was very well attended.  In keeping with the convention’s theme of “2010-2011 BEAR Team”, the keynote address about the intelligence of black bears, was delivered by Steve Searles, also known as the “Bear Whisperer.”

All who attended the convention agree that the experiences renewed and refreshed their Kiwanian spirit and emphasized that each member is a part of an amazing international organization dedicated to helping children and making the world a better place.

The 25th Annual Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp BBQ- August 13, 2011

Each summer, wheelchair campers, ages 4-18 years old, are introduced to a variety of adaptive sports including wheelchair softball, basketball, tennis, rugby, archery, bocce ball, outrigger canoe, waterskiing, sailing, yoga, handcycling, and much more. The week-long camp’s goal is to help establish the building blocks of an active life through the introduction of adaptive sports and recreation.

Our club provides all the food for the final Family Day BBQ, under the guidance of event organizer Kim O'Hara.  Fourteen Kiwanians cooked burgers and served salads, chips, drinks and desserts to all the athletes and their families and friends.  The young athletes are an inspiration to us all and we are proud to play a part in this great community event.

Passport to Life Expo - August 10, 2011

Today, 13 members of our Kiwanis family turned out for the Passport to Life Expo.  Passport to Life is a career and education expo for youth who are on probation. The event, now in its third year, grew from the belief that all youth, including adjudicated youth with probation histories, have the ability to succeed if they have the right training, support, and opportunities. The goal of the event is to improve their chances to succeed in life by promoting education, training, and career exploration.

This is the second year we have volunteered to feed the 800 youth and 200 adults who attend this amazing event. Our members not only bought all the food, we were also on hand to cook 1200 hot dogs and give each participant water, chips and cookies. Everything went smoothly thanks to the efforts of George & Kathy Butterstein, John & Pam Chandler, Bob Frankhouser, Tony Haas, Jim McDonald, Larry & Pam McLeland, Luisa Moore, Terry Shanklin, Kevin Tostado and Bob Wall.

We are glad to support this worthwhile event, in the hopes that it will indeed make a difference in the lives of the young men and women we served today!

Torrey Pines Interclub - August 10, 2011

The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club meets each Wednesday morning at The Grill, on the top floor of the La Jolla Hotel.
Our newest member, Brian Arnold, joined Debbie Yost and George & Kathy Butterstein to fulfill his initiation requirement to attend an interclub. It is always fun to join other Kiwanis clubs and this morning was no exception. We enjoyed good company, delicious food and breath-taking views of the La Jolla village and coastline.

KOD Mark Nesbit's trivia questions concerning San Diego history managed to raise some money for his club and provide us with some interesting facts about San Diego. The guest speaker was Ramma Makani, the public relations director for the Rural/Metro corporation. Rural/Metro is a private contractor that provides ambulance services for San Diego county. It is one of the largest ambulance companies in North America, providing "911" emergency and non-emergency medical transportation services, as well as a variety of private fire protection services. To learn more about this company, and the roll it plays in San Diego, click here.

Clairemont Hills Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast - August 6, 2011

The Clairemont Hills Kiwanis members served pancakes, sausage links, melon, juice and coffee from inside the Rec Center, as part of the Clairemont Family Day celebration.    It was an opportunity for us to enjoy great food and meet with our friends and fellow Kiwanians.  On hand were Terry Shanklin, Bob Frankhouser and his son Brian, Boyd Sauter, Mary and Tony Haas, Mary's sister, Cookie, John and Pam Chandler, Pat Jordan, and George and Kathy Butterstein.  We were happy we could be there to support our fellow Kiwanians.

After breakfast, we strolled around the grounds and enjoyed a wonderful car show and dance performances!  Civic groups and organizations were on hand to highlight their rolls in the community, and carnival and pony rides added to the fun!

We were happy to support the Clairemont Hills Kiwanis.  Last year, they contributed $10,000 to their community, gave 583 hours in service and benefited 496 youth!

La Jolla Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast - July 30, 2011

We enjoyed an interclub with our La Jolla colleagues at their 48th annual Kiwanis pancake breakfast fund raiser at the La Jolla Rec. Center.  On hand to enjoy the delicious blueberry pancakes and sausages were Boyd Sauter, Mary & Tony Haas, Kathy & George Butterstein and Sandy Vish.

This event,  was a big hit for all ages as always, with more than 1,000 breakfasts served. A jazz band provided live entertainment, a clown painted children’s faces, and kids played on jumpees or rode ponies — lots of people ate lots of blueberry pancakes!

The breakfast is one of the La Jolla Kiwanis Club’s annual major events. The club raises and donates more than $200,000 per year through the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla Foundation.

We are proud to be a part of the Kiwanis family and are glad we could join the La Jolla Kiwanians for a fun...and filling...morning!

Miracle Mile of Quarters - May 7, 2011

The Kiwanis International Division 100  held their annual Miracle Mile of Quarters event at Rady Children’s Hospital on Saturday, May 7. More than 250 Kiwanis members from 60 clubs in San Diego County, community groups, students, hospital employees and patients showed off their skills and designed quarter art placed on red carpets in front of the Hospital. Participants enjoyed a pancake breakfast and a BBQ luncheon. In 2010, the one-day event helped raise more than $100,000 for Rady Children’s. All of the money raised from this event goes directly to support pediatric trauma prevention in San Diego County.

This year, the Grantville-Allied Kiwanis Club contributed $3022 to this worthy cause!  In addition to contributions from club members, money was collected throughout the year in jars located in the following businesses:  Iowa Meat Farms, Brothers Family Restaurant, Keils Market, the SD Flower Shop, Allied Gardens Family Optometry and the 7-11 shops located at 6401 and 7427 Mission Gorge Road. Our thanks to all our supporters and contributors!
